Pre Chemical Peel Care

Updated: Feb 24

Pre-Treatment Instructions:

  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Try to avoid direct sun exposure or tanning beds at least 1-2 weeks before your chemical peel. Sunburned or tanned skin is more sensitive and can increase the risk of complications or irritation during and after the treatment. Always wear broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) if you must be outside.

  • Stop Using Retinoids or Retinol: Discontinue the use of retinoids (e.g., Retin-A, Differin) or products containing retinol at least 5-7 days before your chemical peel. These ingredients can make the skin more sensitive and may increase the risk of irritation or peeling during the treatment.

  • Avoid Strong Exfoliating Products: For at least 5-7 days before your chemical peel, refrain from using exfoliating products such as scrubs, glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). These ingredients can make the skin overly sensitive and may interfere with the peel's effectiveness.

  • Discontinue Waxing or Hair Removal: Avoid waxing, threading, or using depilatory creams in the treatment area for at least 5-7 days before your chemical peel, as these can irritate the skin and make it more sensitive to the peel.

  • Avoid Intense Exercise: On the day before your chemical peel, avoid intense physical activity that might cause excessive sweating. Sweat can irritate the skin after a chemical peel, leading to discomfort.

  • Be Honest About Your Skin Conditions: Inform your esthetician or dermatologist if you have any existing skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea, active acne, or cold sores in the area to be treated. Some conditions may require a modified approach or alternative treatment.

  • Plan for Downtime: While chemical peels vary in strength, be aware that you may experience redness, peeling, or flaking in the days following the procedure. It’s a good idea to schedule the peel when you have minimal social or work commitments, as visible peeling can occur for 5-7 Days post treatment.
